You don\’t need to fully adapt to a New Age lifestyle to get the benefits from using regular meditation. It is something that is easy to do and if done regularly can positively affect your mental and physical health. There are many different meditation methods, so finding ones that work for you may just take a little research.

Meditation has been used by many different cultures. Some are more basic and are easier to learn. Others take more time and practice to master. Each of the methods is designed to clear your mind and enable you to increase your concentration. Some actually allow you to work through problems or issues in an intuitive way. You may find that meditating on an issue may help you to come up with a unique solution to problems which are confronting you.

If you are going to be meditating, you need to find a quiet area that is free of distractions. In the beginning, this is critical. You are still learning how to concentrate and distractions can cause you serious problems. You may find that if you always use the same area, it can actually help to enhance the meditative state you are in. You will begin to associate one set area with meditation and this can be a powerful meditative tool in and of itself.

If you have already heard of meditation techniques, there are a few that you may have found are referred to again and again. Three of these include Buddhist meditation, Zen meditation and transcendental meditation. In fact, Buddhist and Zen meditations are often tied together and referred to as Zen Buddhist meditation.

With Buddhist and Zen meditation, it is the breath that is the primary focus. The feel of your breath entering and leaving your body and the way it feels when it fills your lungs. You do not let your mind drift. It remains on the thoughts and sensations of your breath and ties you to your body. With Zen meditation however you also introduce a specific thought that you concentrate on as well. It may be something as profound as \”what is the sound of one hand clapping\”. In Zen meditation, this thought is called a koan. Transcendental meditation uses a sound or word such as \”ohm\” or \”ahh\” in order to provide a mental focus. Breathing is important but concentration is focused on the sound you are making.

If you are interested in learning more about meditation methods there are a number of excellent websites which can give you information and resources.
