Kids And Stress – How To Help

It is normal for a child to get stressed from time to time – it is a natural reaction for all the changes in the world around and in the child itself. Most of the time the stress is only short-term and disappears as child develops (the only exception is stress related to schooling). However it is still extremely important to learn how to help your child cope with the effects of stress before it reaches levels when professional help becomes necessary.

If your children see you are unhappy, annoyed and frustrated every time you meet a stressful situation, the chances are they will react in the same way. It is necessary to remember that children learn their habits by observing everyone around and copying their reactions. You have to start helping your child from coping with your own stress.

If you intend to help your children, remember that their problems are real, no matter how ridiculous they may seem to you. The fact they are stressed about it is reason enough to treat their problems seriously. You have to give a hand to your child if it seems to be very stressed about something regardless of your feelings towards the situation.

As the result, you have to learn how to talk to your children. The best way to learn that is talk about other things than just dinner and school. Discuss their feelings, their beliefs and hopes. This will give you better contact with your children – it is especially important in helping them cope with their stress. Usually, the real reason of their problems is relatively small, but well-hidden. You have to know how to discuss openly with your children if you hope to succeed.

You do not have to be an expert in a field that makes problems. You do not even have to give good advice. However, if you are to really help your children cope with their stress, you have to be 100% honest. Never lie about anything, especially family problems (even to lessen the pain). Child will sooner or later find out – and in addition to the pain he or she will eventually feel, they will feel betrayed. Most family-induced problems children have do not come from tensions between the family, but from adults lying to kids in order to \”protect them\”.

Do not try to solve the problems for your child. This will really do nothing. All you should do is provide advice, assistance and acceptation to your children decision-making process. Teach them what to do, but try not to interfere with their specific choices unless they are going to be disastrous like leaving high school or becoming a drug dealer.
