Temper tantrums are brought on with out any notice. Your child may be perfectly content one minute and screaming, crying, and stomping the next. Temper tantrums seem to be the way of life for most kids between the ages of two and twelve. Children that are a little older seem to have different reasons and ways about temper tantrums but they are still tantrums none the less.
When a child is just beginning to talk really good we expect them to be able to voice their feelings. A two year old can not put their feelings into words at this age and it can become very frustrating for them. This is a big reason behind a lot of tantrums. No matter how well your two year old understands you and can speak they are still not able to put in to words that they are angry or frustrated.
Staying calm during a temper tantrum is the best thing to do. Listening to reason is not on your child’s list of things to do immediately. However you will get a negative response from them if you are yelling or threatening them. If your child is no longer thrashing around, you should hold your child. When your child feels your embrace it will likely help them start calming down.
As the adult you have to stay strong, and do not give in to the demands your child is making. If you give in to your children when they are having a temper tantrum they will start using tantrums to get their way. If you are in public and your child is throwing a fit most parents tend to just give in to quite them down. Do not give in to their demands. You will more than likely never see these people again but the consequences of giving in to tantrum is something you will have to live with. What the people in public places think of you is nothing compared to that.
When your children get a little bit older the temper tantrums are still there, they are just not so frequent. You will also find that the issues that bring on tantrums are very different. A six year old is learning to read and is becoming increasingly frustrated and so the tantrum begins. If this is happening to you, it is time to explain that he has got to you words to express his feelings but it absolutely has to be done with respect.
When your child reaches the age of about ten the tantrums can get a little dangerous if you do not get a handle on things. Around this age our children are big enough to actually do physical damage to themselves and to others. If you have a child that is nine or ten who throws things and hits when they are having a tantrum I have a couple tips for you. First thing you should do is remove anything from their room they can throw, and second send them straight to their room before the tantrum gets out of control.
You will still hear your child yelling and kicking walls but they will calm down much quicker with nothing in the room to throw around. I suggest not giving the child back the belongings until he has proved that the tantrums have stopped and he can control his temper. Temper tantrums at this age is just bad behavior.
Now that your kid is older they are capable of expressing their feelings without being negative. They are only doing it to get their way. Do not give them what they want, if you do the tantrums will only get worse. Show your child that you are serious.
