As obesity climbs to epic proportions in this country, it’s not impossible to believe that our parents and grandparents, for the most part, ate much better than we do now. They had fresh food which more than likely was purchased every day or so, mainly because refrigerators were smaller and freezers were essentially nothing more than a place to make ice cubes and maybe store a steak and a package of bacon.
Even school lunches were completely different. Schools were only allowed to serve milk – no soda, coffee, milk shakes, energy drinks, or even bottled water. Although the food itself frequently had a bad reputation, it was fixed according to the dietary standards of those days and even though the food pyramid has changed dramatically over the years, schools now serve lunches that most parents don’t even want their kids to eat.
Our lives have changed just as dramatically as nutritional standards. We have dual income families, kids who are forced into too many after school activities and commitments, men who don’t have the same company loyalty their dads did so they work longer hours for job security, and instead of finding time to cook and eat healthy dinners, families tend to fix what is easy – processed and frozen dinners, take out, or fast food burritos, burgers, etc. Add some shredded lettuce and chicken and we are totally convinced we are eating healthy.
Unfortunately, many people feel that they have nothing to worry about if they’re already thin. They fail to realize that even fat people can be “healthy” if their cholesterol levels are normal, and thin people can be at risk for clogged arteries and high cholesterol if they eat junk food.
There’s a difference between learning how to eat healthy and trying to lose weight. Sort of. Many people just aren’t fat. Actually, they’re pretty thin! In spite of eating fried foods, burgers, butter soaked vegetables, and bacon every day with breakfast, some are lucky enough to tip the scales at below average weights.
It is truly a challenge to explain to your skinny girlfriend that ordering extra cheese on her pizza isn’t such a great idea, as she sits across from you reminding you that she takes a size 2 and doesn’t need to watch what she eats.
Too many thin individuals are convinced they have no worries until they are felled by chest pains or a stroke because of their cholesterol levels. They truly believe that their weekly binge drinking, nightly desserts, and fast food lunches have no effect as long as they still wear their “skinny jeans”.

First of all, I would like to say, as someone who has dieted in one way, shape, or form all of her adult life; that diets do not work. Even these travesties that are forced on us by well meaning dietitians and weight loss gurus—-this so called fast weight loss diet—-are a joke. You starve yourself primarily is what takes place, you lose tens of pounds, look great for a few weeks, and then go back to normal food and whammo—-back comes all the lost weight and more with it, just for spite.
We are gluttons for punishment, those of us who are overweight and feel guilty and despondent because of that fact; so we gear up out will power and start the next starvation round of eating to try and fit into what society says we should look like. But, think twice before wanting to start a fast weight loss diet, because they are only temporary fixes and they do more harm than good.
When you cut back your intake of food drastically, your body sends out an APB to all its parts telling them to stop running at the speed they are now at, and slow down, conserve, don’t overdo it, we “ain’t gittin” enough food to stay at this speed. So, your metabolism slows down, your poor body has to shut down its natural design for operation, and conform to a starvation mode of operation. Sure, you’ll lose weight, but you can’t stay on a starvation diet forever, so once you abandon the fast weight loss diet, you are now ready to put those pounds back on big time—–and put them on you will, every time.
Some of the fast weight loss diet plans that are out there, either free on the Internet, or for sale; are potentially harmful to your overall health. Do you think all these do-gooders who represent the weight loss company have your best health interests at heart? The answer is a resounding NO. They are in the game to make as much money as they can off your woe, and then disappear into the fog as quickly as they came once their ineffectiveness or danger has been found out. And a lot of these products are really dangerous: if you have an underlying medical condition, such as heart disease, or liver problems; these diets can wreak havoc with your system and make you really sick, or in extreme cases, kill you.
Just think about it. If you have finally decided that you need to do something about your weight, and you are considering a fast weight loss diet, think again. How long did it take you to put that weight on, months? Years?—yep that’s more like it. The amount of food you get to eat on a daily basis is just about enough for one meal for a parakeet, and you find yourself chewing on your sleeves the first week. But, you do lose weight, you feel good, you look good, and your vitals have never been better. So what’s wrong with that? Nothing, except almost everyone I know, including my adult son who has gone through the program, lost weight, then went onto a maintenance eating plan and gained almost all the weight back.
There are many modified eating plans available for those of us who need to lose weight and are thinking about using a fast weight loss diet, simply because we cannot stand looking at ourselves another minute and need something done right away. Some of these quicky diets can be used to jump start your weight loss plan, but don’t rely on them solely. Nature has designed your body to run in a certain way, and no amount of tinkering on your part will change that; in order to keep the weight off once you have lost it, you need to alter your previous lifestyle and eating habits. And about the alcohol consumption, for obvious reasons, a little goes a long way: alcohol is also empty calories and can add serious weight if consumed regularly over a period of time, so if you are determined to lose weight—-watch your consumption, or better yet, stop drinking alcohol altogether.
There is no magic cure all when it comes to losing weight. It is difficult to do for the most part and usually takes a lengthy period of time before you see dramatic results, but for serious weight loss and keeping it off power, then you need to buckle down and put your mind to it. Remember that there are many easy ways to lose weight and for the most part, they all boil down to creating a new plan of eating, a changed outlook on the foodstuffs you eat, and sticking to your plan until you see results. There are no quick fixes in weight loss, but what you need to do is to lower your calorie intake, increase your calorie output, ditch foods that are unhealthy for you——ie: unnatural sweets, fried foods, empty calories—–and create a new way of eating and living that will release that thinner you that is waiting inside.
